Sunday, August 24, 2008 Hi people, here to share about yesterday's sermon at church. (: The sermon was titled Truth Decay. Yep. So basically, yesterday's sermon was on the ninth commandment. "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.", which simply means - Do not lie. From the sermon we learnt about why we lie, why God prohibits lying& the ways that we lie. So, why do we lie? 1. For convenience. 2. To shift the blame. 3. To save ourselves from embarrassment. 4. To boost our self-esteem by making others look bad. * The ultimate reason why we lie is because we put ourselves& our own interests above anything else, including truth. Someone once said, "Sin has many tools but lie is the handle thae fits them all." Why do God prohibit lying? Pfft, I didn't catch this because it was all verses from the bible. ._. Ways we lie. 1. The outright lie, aka the obvious lie. - The most obvious type of untruth is the complete lie, where there is a total fabrication of new facts, that don't exist. * 10 great Singaporean lies: 10. Tell them I'm not at home! 9. Teacher I forgot to bring my homework. 8. This will hurt me more than it will hurt you. 7. I'm sorry I'm late. I'm caught in a traffic jam/ LRT broke down. 6. My computer broke down. 5. I'm on my way! 4. Excuse grass. [Mostly used for army.] 3. I just need five minutes of your time. 2. I was just about to call you. Your line was engaged! 1. Doctor I don't feel well today. Got headache. Haha, these are just for laughs. (: 2. Insinuation - It is to make a statement which sets someone to think about something that's untrue. To stop insinuation, we can do the following: Ask the person : "Are you trying to say that...?" or "Do you mean that...?" 3. The half-truth - It can be simply not giving the full picture, thus allowing the recipient to distort the truth. Someone said that half-truth was being economical with the truth. 4. The excuse - By making an excuse, we divert the blame& shame from ourselves onto someone or something else. - We're also transferring our guilt& have no chance to repent. 5. Gossip [I'd personally highlight this. Haha.] - Sharing tales about something without concern for either truth or love. When we're about to gossip, ask ourselves : "Are we ready to put our name to this?" - Remember that it takes two to gossip; One to give it& one to receive it. 6. Flattery - Both the flatterer& the slanderer do not care for truth. 7. Exaggeration 8. Silence - By keeping quiet when someone passes an untrue remark about someone else, you're involved in the lie as well. So the main point is : To prevent truth decay, we've got to do something. & it starts with YOU. (: So yea! I learnt quite alot from the sermon which makes me a happy person. & then after sermon had dinner& celebrated Chu Lien's& my sis' birthday. So yup. & after that I went to Mac with my dad to study. ._. I spent two& a half hours completing my notes on diplomacy& writing my own conclusions. ._. Such a slow speed. Okay, this shall be my last post, hopefully, until I finish my O's. (: So see you till them! :D All I wanna do is praise You
